The children are encouraged to become life-long readers and writers and to become skilled and confident communicators.

Writing is taught through the use of a range of exciting and different texts. The children get opportunity to explore and immerse themselves in the literature before they learn the skills needed to write in that style. They apply their writing skills across the curriculum. All children take spellings home to learn. They are tested each week.

Reading is taught through skill-based sessions. High quality texts are chosen to challenge the children and help them apply the skills through meaningful discussion and written comprehension. Accelerated Reader is used as a tool to guide the children in choosing the right book. They can take a quiz on what they have read, once they have finished, which tests their understanding. All children are expected to read regularly and read for pleasure and enjoyment.
